Vinland Saga Review: What It's About, Genre and Is It Worth Watching?
Vinland Saga is a Viking-age historical drama about Thorfinn, who chases revenge and then has to learn to live without it. Our review covers the story, genre, real history behind it, both seasons and whether Season 3 is coming.

Quick answer: Vinland Saga is a historical drama set in the Viking Age about Thorfinn, a boy who grows up chasing revenge and then has to learn how to live without it. It is one of the most acclaimed anime of the last decade: Season 1 is a brutal war story, Season 2 is a quiet, moving story about guilt and redemption on a farm. Watch it if you want a mature, character-driven story; just know Season 2 is slow by design.
The anime has two seasons (48 episodes). The manga by Makoto Yukimura ended in 2025 at chapter 220. As of late 2026, Season 3 has not been announced.

What is Vinland Saga about? (spoiler-light)
Thorfinn is the son of Thors, a legendary warrior who walked away from war. When Thors is killed in an ambush by the mercenary leader Askeladd and his band, young Thorfinn joins Askeladd's band for one reason: to earn the right to duel him and take revenge.
Season 1 follows that band through the Danish invasion of England, where Thorfinn grows into a skilled and hollow killer, and the young prince Canute becomes a ruthless leader. Season 2 jumps forward: Thorfinn is a slave on a Danish farm. Alongside a fellow slave named Einar, he slowly faces the people he killed and asks what a life without violence would look like. Behind it all is the dream of Vinland, a land across the sea with no war and no slavery.
Is it based on real history?
Partly. Several main characters are based on real people: Thorfinn Karlsefni, an Icelandic explorer who tried to settle Vinland around the year 1010; Canute the Great, who became king of England, Denmark and Norway; and Thorkell the Tall, a famous Viking commander. Vinland itself is the Norse name for part of North America, and archaeologists have found a Norse site at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada. Yukimura fills the gaps with fiction, so treat it as historical drama, not a documentary.
What works
Thorfinn's character arc
Few anime protagonists change as much. Season 1 shows how revenge empties a person; Season 2 shows how hard it is to rebuild one. His father's words, "You have no enemies", become the heart of the series.
Askeladd
Askeladd is one of anime's great anti-villains: clever, funny, cruel and secretly driven by a goal larger than plunder. Our explainer on why Askeladd doesn't want to become king digs into his motives.
A story that takes a risk
Season 2 turns away from battle almost completely. Some viewers found that slow, but many consider it the stronger season because it confronts the violence of Season 1 honestly.
Production
Wit Studio's Season 1 delivers grim, detailed battles and great music. MAPPA's Season 2 keeps the same look with a gentler, more grounded tone.
What might not work for you
Season 2's slow pace is a deliberate choice, but it is a big shift.
The violence in Season 1 is graphic and sometimes hard to watch.
No Season 3 yet. The anime stops partway through the manga, so you will need to read to see Thorfinn reach Vinland.

What happens after Season 2?
The manga continues with Thorfinn's journey to raise money and people for Vinland, the Eastern Expedition, the Baltic Sea War and finally the Vinland arc. Since the manga is complete, there is enough material for two or more seasons, but MAPPA has not confirmed one, and Yukimura has publicly denied rumours that Season 3 had been announced.
Vinland Saga review verdict
Vinland Saga is a rare anime that earns its reputation. It starts as an action-revenge story and becomes a deep, humane story about violence and forgiveness. If you liked Attack on Titan, Berserk or Pluto, put it near the top of your list. For another thoughtful series, read our Pluto anime review.
Rating: 9/10. One of the best character dramas in anime.
