Akshaya Tritiya 2027: Date, Muhurat and What the Day Means
Updated: Sep 9
Akshaya Tritiya 2027 falls on Sunday, 9 May, on Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya. The puja and gold buying muhurat runs from about 05:35 AM to 09:03 AM for New Delhi, a window of roughly three and a half hours.

The word akshaya means that which never diminishes. The belief attached to the day is that anything begun on it, whether a venture, a donation, a purchase or a marriage, keeps growing and never runs out. It is counted among the sade teen shubh muhurat, the three and a half most auspicious days of the year, when no separate muhurat is needed to start something.

A date discrepancy worth knowing about. Drik Panchang and most published calendars put Akshaya Tritiya on Sunday, 9 May 2027, because the rule requires Tritiya to be present during Purvahan Kaal, the first part of the day. Some panchangs, including Samvat, place it on Saturday, 8 May 2027, since the tithi begins that morning. If your family follows a specific panchang or your jeweller is advertising a particular date, check which reckoning is being used. Buying on the evening of 8 May also falls inside the tithi.
The legends behind Akshaya Tritiya
The Akshaya Patra
During the Pandavas' exile, Surya gave Yudhishthira a vessel that produced an endless supply of food each day until Draupadi had eaten. This Akshaya Patra is the clearest source of the day's association with abundance that does not run out.
Parshuram Jayanti
Akshaya Tritiya is observed as the birthday of Parshurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu, which is why the day is also called Parshuram Jayanti in many parts of the country.
The start of Treta Yuga
Traditional reckoning places the beginning of the Treta Yuga on this tithi, which adds to its standing as a day of beginnings.
Sudama and Krishna
Sudama visited Krishna at Dwarka with a handful of poha as his only gift, and returned to find his poverty gone. The story is attached to this day and is the reason charity is considered especially fruitful on it.
Ganga's descent and Vyasa's dictation
The descent of the Ganga to earth and the day Vyasa began dictating the Mahabharata to Ganesha are both traditionally placed on Akshaya Tritiya.
Jain significance
For Jains the day is Varshi Tapa parana. Rishabhadeva, the first Tirthankara, broke a year long fast with sugarcane juice offered by King Shreyans. Jains who complete the Varshi Tap penance break it with sugarcane juice on this day.
What people do on Akshaya Tritiya
• Buy gold or silver. The most visible custom, and the one jewellers build the day around.
• Start something new. Businesses, shops, construction, and new account books are opened.
• Weddings. It is one of the few days when no muhurat check is considered necessary, so it is heavily booked.
• Charity. Giving food, water, clothes, an earthen pot or an umbrella is traditional, tied to the approaching summer.
• Vishnu and Lakshmi puja, with tulsi, yellow flowers and a lamp, performed in the morning window.
• Ganga snan, a ritual bath, where the river is accessible.
Akshaya Tritiya puja vidhi
1. Bathe early, ideally before sunrise, and wear clean clothes.
2. Set up Vishnu and Lakshmi together in the puja space, with a lamp lit.
3. Offer tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, sandal paste, akshata and yellow cloth. Yellow is the colour of the day.
4. Offer satu, barley, gram, cucumber and jaggery, the seasonal items traditionally given.
5. Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama or the Lakshmi Stotra during the morning muhurat.
6. Give daan: water pots, hand fans, umbrellas, footwear, food or clothing, all traditional gifts for the season ahead.
A practical note on buying gold
The tradition is a religious and cultural one, and it is worth separating that from the financial question. Demand and therefore pricing pressure peak on this single day, and jewellers time their promotions around it. If you are buying for the custom, buying a small token amount satisfies it just as well as a large purchase.
If you are buying gold as an investment rather than as jewellery, the things that actually matter are making charges, purity certification through BIS hallmarking, and the buyback terms of the seller, none of which change because of the date. Digital gold, gold ETFs and gold mutual funds are alternatives that avoid making charges entirely. This is general information, not financial advice, and it is worth speaking to a registered financial adviser before making a significant purchase.
