Best Agents and Team Composition for Ascent in Valorant (2026)
Ascent is won in mid, and Omen and Sova are the best agents to win it. See the best Ascent agents by role, what pros picked in 2026, three team comps for ranked and pro play, and whether Ascent is in the current map pool.

Ascent is one of the first maps most Valorant players learn. It has two sites, A and B, linked by a wide open mid, and almost every round is decided by who controls that middle courtyard. That is why the best agents for Ascent are the ones that win information and take space: a good initiator, a fast controller and a sentinel who can hold a site alone.
Quick answer: the best agents for Ascent in 2026 are Omen and Sova, followed by Chamber, Cypher or Killjoy as the sentinel and Jett, Neon or Phoenix as the duelist. At Champions Shanghai 2026, pros picked both Omen and Sova in about 81% of Ascent maps. A strong ranked comp is Omen, Sova, Killjoy, Jett and KAY/O, and the 2026 pro comp is closer to Omen, Sova, Chamber, Neon and Sage. Note: Ascent left the Competitive and Premier pool on 13 October 2026, so for now it is only in Unrated, Swiftplay and casual modes.
Is Ascent in the ranked map pool right now?
No. Patch 13.08 on 13 October 2026 removed Ascent and Split from Competitive and brought back Bind and Corrode. The current ranked pool is Abyss, Bind, Corrode, Haven, Lotus, Summit and Sunset. Ascent spent several months of 2026 in the pool and was the fourth most picked map at Champions Shanghai, so expect it back in a future rotation.

Why mid control decides Ascent
Ascent looks simple, but three features shape every agent pick:
The open mid courtyard. Attackers who take mid can hit A through Tree/Catwalk or B through Market. Defenders who hold it can push into the attackers' half and cut off both routes.
Two closable doors. Defenders can shut the doors on A and at B Market to slow pushes and stop rotations. A shut door means a quiet flank, so watch it.
Long sightlines into A Main and B Main. These suit Operator players and agents who clear angles from range.
So on Ascent you want an agent who sees through walls (Sova), smokes that go up fast (Omen), and a sentinel who can lock one site while the rest of the team plays mid.
Best Ascent agents by role
Role | Best pick | Strong alternatives | What it does on Ascent |
Controller | Omen | Astra, Brimstone, Clove | Quick smokes on Mid Top, Tree and B Main; teleports for off-angles |
Initiator | Sova | KAY/O, Fade, Gekko | Recon Bolt and Owl Drone clear mid and sites from safe spots |
Sentinel | Chamber | Killjoy, Cypher, Sage | Operator from long range or a lockdown site setup |
Duelist | Jett | Neon, Phoenix, Yoru, Raze | Entry through A Main or B Main and Operator duels in mid |
Omen: the default controller
Omen's Dark Cover smokes are quick to place across the map, which matters on a map where you must smoke both mid and a site in the same round. Shrouded Step lets him take sneaky angles above mid, and Paranoia blinds through the narrow doors. Pros chose Omen over Viper here, and Viper was not picked on Ascent at Champions 2026.
Sova: Ascent's best initiator
Ascent's open spaces and flat walls are perfect for Sova's Recon Bolt lineups. One bolt over B Main or A Main shows the whole site. His Owl Drone checks mid before anyone peeks, and Hunter's Fury can stop a plant or defuse through walls. Pros played Sova in every Ascent map at Masters London 2026 and in about four of every five at Champions.
Chamber, Killjoy or Cypher: the sentinel
In 2026, pros most often used Chamber on Ascent as an Operator player who also holds a site. In ranked, Killjoy is easier: her Turret and Alarmbot can watch B site alone while the team plays mid, and Lockdown is excellent for retaking A. Cypher is a strong choice if your team keeps losing to mid lurks, because a Spycam or Trapwire at mid catches flankers.
Jett, Neon or Phoenix: the entry
Ascent's long angles reward Jett, especially with an Operator in mid or A Main. Neon suits fast B executes. Phoenix was popular with pros at Masters London because his Curveball flashes clear the tight entries onto both sites.
Best Ascent team compositions
1. Pro-style comp (2026): Omen, Sova, Chamber, Neon, Sage
This mirrors what top teams played at Champions 2026. Omen and Sova handle smokes and information, Chamber anchors with the Operator, Neon leads fast entries and Sage's wall and heals help hold sites and retake.
2. Ranked comp: Omen, Sova, Killjoy, Jett, KAY/O
The classic Ascent comp still works well in solo queue. KAY/O's ZERO/point knife suppresses defenders' abilities before a push, and his flashes clear Market and Tree. Killjoy holds a site so the team can play mid with four.
3. Information-heavy comp: Omen, Sova, Cypher, Killjoy, Phoenix
This builds on our original recommendation of a balanced, info-first comp. Two sentinels make defence very hard to crack, Sova finds enemies early and Phoenix self-heals after entering. It is slower on attack, so use it with a patient team.
How to attack Ascent
Take mid first. Win mid with Sova's drone and an Omen smoke on Mid Top, then decide which site to hit.
For A: smoke Heaven and Tree, flash A Main, and plant near Generator or Wine.
For B: smoke Market and B Main's far corner, Recon Bolt the site, then enter with your duelist. Watch Market for the rotation.
Post-plant: use Sova's Shock Bolt and Omen's Paranoia to stop the defuse.
How to defend Ascent
Send one or two players to contest mid early. A pick in mid often wins the round.
Keep a sentinel on B. Killjoy or Cypher setups give early warning on B Main.
Use the doors. Close the B Market or A door when you need to slow a push, but have someone listen for it opening.
Retake A together with Lockdown, Sova's ultimate or Omen smokes. A is easier to retake than to hold alone.

Agents to avoid on Ascent
Viper: her wall doesn't split Ascent's sites as neatly as it does on Split or Lotus, and pros skipped her here in 2026.
Harbor: his water walls are better on larger, longer maps.
Hush: the new telekinetic duelist from patch 13.09 is too new for any proven Ascent setup. Learn her on maps in rotation first.
The verdict
For Ascent, lock in Omen and Sova first, add a sentinel who can hold a site alone (Chamber in pro play, Killjoy in ranked), and pick a duelist who can win long-range duels like Jett or Neon. Win mid, and Ascent becomes much easier. Want help choosing your main? Read who is the best Valorant agent, or plan for maps in the current pool with our Haven guide.
