1. Talaash (2012)

Inspector Surjan Singh Shekhawat (Aamir Khan) investigates a film star's mysterious car crash on a deserted Mumbai road while he and his wife (Rani Mukerji) are still grieving their son's death. An escort called Rosie (Kareena Kapoor) becomes his informant.

Spoiler: Rosie is the ghost of Simran, a woman the star and his friends left to die on that road years earlier. Surjan finds her remains, gives her a proper cremation and, in a parallel thread, finds peace about his son.

2. Yeh Saali Aashiqui (2019)

two people sitting togehter

Sahil and Mittee fall in love at a hotel management college in Shimla, but the romance turns into a bitter fight when she accuses him of a crime and he is sent to a mental hospital. What starts as a love story becomes a revenge thriller.

Spoiler: Mittee believes she has killed Sahil, but the man she killed was his identical twin, Surya. Sahil faked his death and walks free while she is jailed for life.

3. Vodka Diaries (2018)

three people watching snowfall

ACP Ashwini Dixit (Kay Kay Menon) investigates three murders on one night at a Manali club. Then his poet wife goes missing, the "victims" turn up alive and nobody recognises him. Critics noted its similarity to Hollywood's Shutter Island, so if you have seen that film you may guess the direction.

Spoiler: Ashwini is really Rishi Gautam, a writer who accidentally killed his wife in a rage. His psychiatrist staged his own novel's plot around him so he would rediscover his real identity.

4. Dhokha: Round D Corner (2022)

mirror shattering

A man (Aparshakti Khurana) who claims he was wrongly convicted of a bombing takes a woman hostage in her Mumbai flat. Her husband (R. Madhavan) tells the police she has a delusional disorder; she says he is drugging her. The title literally means "betrayal", and the film lives up to it.

Spoiler: almost everyone is lying. The husband really was giving her the wrong pills, and the police officer handling the case had his own secret link to her and helped arrange the hostage-taker's escape.

5. Missing (2018)

two people standing

Sushant (Manoj Bajpayee) and Aparna (Tabu) check into a resort in Mauritius with her three-year-old daughter, Titli, who vanishes overnight. The police soon notice that the two adults describe the child differently.

Spoiler: the film keeps switching who is unreliable. In the end, an old man arrives looking for his daughter, and his photo shows Aparna: she is a dangerous patient who escaped an asylum.

6. 13B (2009)

man standing with hammer

Manohar (R. Madhavan) moves his family into flat 13B, where a TV serial starts showing events that then happen to his own family. It was shot in Hindi and Tamil at the same time (the Tamil version is Yavarum Nalam) and is still one of the best Indian horror-thrillers. Fans of our top horror movies and series list will enjoy it.

Spoiler: the serial is the spirits of a family murdered on that site in 1977, and the real killer is Manohar's trusted friend Dr Shinde. Even after he dies, the last scene hints that his spirit is not done with Manohar.

7. Ittefaq (2017)

man smoking

Two people, a writer (Sidharth Malhotra) and a young wife (Sonakshi Sinha), are found at two murder scenes on the same night, and each tells a different story. A police officer (Akshaye Khanna) has to work out who is lying. It borrows its title and basic idea from the 1969 Ittefaq but tells a new story.

Spoiler: the writer did it. He killed both his wife and the other woman's husband, a lawyer, to bury a scandal, and he flies out of India before the officer can stop him.

8. Maharaja (2024)

man sitting with weapon

Strictly a Tamil film rather than Bollywood, Maharaja reached viewers across India after it began streaming on Netflix in July 2024. Vijay Sethupathi plays a Chennai barber who walks into a police station to report that his dustbin, "Lakshmi", has been stolen. The non-linear story is deliberately confusing until it clicks.

Spoiler: the barber adopted his daughter after an accident killed her family, and she is the biological daughter of the criminal (Anurag Kashyap) who led the attack on his home. The criminal only realises at the end that he hurt his own child.

9. Badla (2019)

two people watching each other

A businesswoman (Taapsee Pannu) accused of murdering her lover hires a famous lawyer (Amitabh Bachchan) to prepare her defence in a single meeting. Sujoy Ghosh's film is an official adaptation of the Spanish thriller The Invisible Guest (Contratiempo), and it is made almost entirely of conversation.

Spoiler: the "lawyer" is not her lawyer at all. He is the father of the young man whose death she and her lover covered up, and he has tricked her into confessing on record.

10. Chehre (2021)

two people talking

Stranded in a snowstorm, a corporate executive (Emraan Hashmi) shelters in a mountain house where a retired judge, a defence lawyer, a former hangman and a prosecutor (Amitabh Bachchan) play a mock-trial game. He agrees to be the "accused", thinking it is harmless fun.

Spoiler: the game exposes how he plotted his boss's death to become CEO. He is "sentenced", runs for it and falls to his death, and the final scene suggests the group's next guest is his accomplice.

Why these endings work

  • They play fair. In Badla and Ittefaq, the clues are on screen from the start, so a rewatch is rewarding.

  • They use an unreliable narrator. Vodka Diaries, Missing and Dhokha show you the story through someone whose version you shouldn't trust.

  • The twist is emotional, not just clever. Talaash and Maharaja stay with you because the reveal is about grief and guilt, not only "who did it".

If you like this style of storytelling, our list of the best thriller movies of all time has more global picks, and our ranking of the best movies of Aamir Khan explains where Talaash sits in his career.

Streaming rights in India change often, so check the official apps (Netflix, Prime Video, JioHotstar, ZEE5 and others) to see where each film is currently available.
