Quick answer: choose Genshin Impact if you want exploration, story, anime-style characters and a game you can play solo at your own pace, including on your phone. Gameplay: adventure vs competition

Genshin Impact is an open-world action RPG. You explore a large fantasy world called Teyvat, follow a long main story, solve puzzles and fight enemies using a team of four characters. Combat is built on elemental reactions, such as combining Hydro and Pyro, so team building matters more than reflexes. New regions, characters and events arrive in regular updates, roughly every six weeks.

Valorant is a tactical shooter. Two teams of five take turns attacking and defending; attackers try to plant the Spike and defenders try to stop them. Each agent has abilities such as smokes, flashes, walls and heals, but most fights are still decided by aim and teamwork. Modes include Competitive, Unrated, Swiftplay, Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch.

Money: gacha vs skins

This is one of the biggest differences.

  • In Genshin Impact, you unlock new characters and weapons through a gacha system called wishes. You can earn the in-game currency for free by playing, but many players also spend money. All story content can be completed without paying, but spending can get you stronger characters faster.

  • In Valorant, all agents can be unlocked by playing, and money buys only cosmetics like weapon skins. Spending never makes you stronger.

If you are worried about overspending, Valorant is the safer choice. If you play Genshin, set yourself a monthly limit, or play free-to-play.

Multiplayer and time commitment

Genshin Impact feels like a single-player game. You can invite up to three friends into your world for co-op, but the story is played solo. You can log in for 15 minutes to finish daily tasks or play for hours, and nobody is waiting on you.

Valorant is built around matches with other people. A full competitive match can last well over half an hour, and leaving early hurts your team and can get you penalised. Ranked play unlocks once your account reaches the required level. It is most fun with a regular group of friends.

Hardware: phone or PC?

  • Genshin Impact runs on phones, but it is a demanding game. On budget phones, expect to use lower graphics settings, and keep plenty of storage free, because updates are large.

  • Valorant runs well even on modest PCs, which is one reason it is so popular in India. It is also on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A mobile version exists, but only in China so far. See our article on when Valorant Mobile is releasing for the latest.

Which game is better for you?

Pick Valorant if you:

  • Enjoy competition and climbing ranks

  • Have friends to play with regularly

  • Prefer a fair game where money doesn't buy power

  • Have a decent PC or a PS5 / Xbox Series X|S

The verdict

Neither game is "better" overall. Genshin Impact is the better pick for story, exploration and relaxed mobile play. Valorant is the better pick for competition, teamwork and a free-to-play model where money never buys power. Both are free, so the easiest way to decide is to try both.
