How Much Money Is Required to Live in Mumbai? Monthly Budget for 2026
How much money do you need to live in Mumbai? A 2026 monthly budget for singles and families, with rents by area, transport fares, food and bills, the salary you need, and tips to live in Mumbai for less.

Mumbai is India's most expensive city to live in, and rent is the reason. Food, transport and bills are only a little higher than in other metros, but a room or flat in a good area can eat half of a starting salary. So the real question is not "how much does Mumbai cost?" but "how much do I need, given where I live and how I live?"
Quick answer: in late 2026, a single person needs roughly ₹25,000–₹35,000 a month to live simply in Mumbai (shared flat or PG in the suburbs, local trains, mostly home food), and about ₹45,000–₹65,000 a month to live comfortably alone in a 1 BHK in a suburb like Malad, Thane or Navi Mumbai. A family of four needs about ₹75,000–₹1.3 lakh a month for a mid-range lifestyle in the suburbs. Living in Bandra, Juhu or South Mumbai can double these figures.

1. Rent: where most of your money goes
Rent decides your whole budget. Here is what a 1 BHK typically rented for in 2026, according to listing sites:
Area | 1 BHK rent per month |
Colaba, Nariman Point | ₹55,000–₹95,000 |
Bandra West, Juhu | ₹45,000–₹80,000 |
Powai, Vikhroli | ₹25,000–₹48,000 |
Andheri West, Malad | ₹20,000–₹35,000 |
Borivali, Kandivali | ₹15,000–₹26,000 |
Navi Mumbai (Vashi, Kharghar) | ₹14,000–₹25,000 |
Thane West | ₹13,000–₹22,000 |
Mira Road, Bhayander | ₹10,000–₹18,000 |
Kalyan, Dombivli | ₹8,000–₹15,000 |

Upfront costs matter too. Mumbai landlords usually ask for a security deposit of a few months' rent, and brokerage of about one month's rent is common. Moving into a ₹25,000 flat can need ₹1 lakh or more on day one. Some zero-deposit rental services, such as CirclePe, can reduce that upfront amount. Our guide to security deposits for renting in Mumbai explains what is normal and how refunds work.
2. Transport: cheap if you use trains and metro
Mumbai's public transport is among the cheapest in India for the distance it covers.
Local trains: a second-class monthly pass costs only a few hundred rupees, even for long distances. First-class and AC local passes cost more but are still cheaper than daily autos.
Metro: Mumbai now has several metro lines, including the underground Aqua Line (Line 3) from Cuffe Parade to Aarey. Daily metro commuters typically spend about ₹600–₹1,500 a month.
BEST buses: a bus pass costs a few hundred rupees a month.
Autos and taxis: from 1 September 2026, the minimum fare is ₹27 for an auto and ₹33 for a black-and-yellow taxi. Relying on autos or cabs every day can cost ₹2,500–₹5,500 a month.
Own vehicle: petrol is over ₹100 a litre, and parking is hard to find. A car can cost ₹9,000–₹16,000 a month to run.
3. Food: from vada pav to fine dining
Groceries: about ₹4,000–₹7,000 a month for one person and ₹10,000–₹18,000 for a family of three or four.
Office canteen or local lunch: about ₹80–₹180 a meal.
Mid-range restaurant: about ₹250–₹500 per person.
Street food: a vada pav still costs well under ₹50.
A tiffin service (two home-style meals a day) is popular with single professionals and usually costs less than ordering food every day.
4. Utilities and bills
Electricity: about ₹800–₹2,000 a month for a single person and ₹2,500–₹5,500 for a family; using an AC pushes it higher.
Cooking gas: around one LPG cylinder a month, roughly ₹900–₹1,100.
Broadband: about ₹700–₹1,200 a month.
Mobile plan: about ₹200–₹500 a month.
Water: often included in rent or society maintenance.
5. Lifestyle, health and savings
Gym memberships, movies, weekend outings and shopping vary hugely. A realistic allowance is ₹5,000–₹10,000 a month for a single person. Keep money aside for health insurance, because hospital bills in Mumbai are high, and try to save at least 10–20% of your income.

What salary do you need to live in Mumbai?
A simple rule is to keep rent at about 30% of your take-home pay.
₹25,000–₹35,000 in hand: possible, but only with shared housing or a PG in the outer suburbs (Mira Road, Kalyan, Dombivli, Navi Mumbai) and careful spending.
₹50,000–₹65,000 in hand: comfortable for a single person living alone in a 1 BHK in Thane, Navi Mumbai, Malad or Borivali, with some savings.
₹1 lakh+ in hand: needed for a family of four in a 2 BHK in a good suburb, more if you want Andheri, Powai or Bandra.
How to live in Mumbai for less
Live near a railway or metro station in the suburbs, Thane or Navi Mumbai, rather than close to the office.
Share a flat. A 2 BHK shared by three or four people is often much cheaper per person than a 1 BHK alone.
Use trains and metro, not daily cabs.
Cook at home or use a tiffin service on weekdays.
Negotiate the deposit and brokerage before signing the leave and licence agreement.
Track every expense for the first three months to find where money leaks.
