How to Use Claude for Free: What the Free Plan Includes and Its Limits (2026)
The official way to get Claude at no cost, the phone and age rules, what the Free plan does and doesn't include, how the five-hour limit works, and when Pro or Max is worth it.

Quick answer: You can use Claude for free by signing up at claude.ai or in the Claude app for Android, iPhone, Mac or Windows. The Free plan costs ₹0, needs no card, and works in India. You need to be at least 18 and verify a mobile number. The catch is the usage limit: Anthropic gives free users a limited amount of use that resets five hours after your first message, plus a weekly cap. The most advanced models and some features need a paid plan.
That's the only official free route for ordinary users. "Free Claude Pro" apps, shared logins and cracked tools are not from Anthropic and can put your account and data at risk. Below is what you actually get, the limits, and when paying makes sense, based on Anthropic's own pricing and Help Center pages as of November 2026.
How to sign up for Claude Free (step by step)
Go to claude.ai in your browser, or install the official Claude app from the Play Store or App Store (publisher: Anthropic).
Sign up with your email address or Google account.
Verify your phone number. Anthropic's Help Center says phone verification is required for all new users. VoIP numbers, Google Voice numbers, numbers made with apps, and landlines are not accepted, so use your normal Jio, Airtel, Vi or BSNL mobile number. One number can be used for at most three accounts, and it can't be changed after verification.
Confirm you are 18 or older. Anthropic's terms require users to be at least 18.
Start chatting. You're on the Free plan by default. Ignore the upgrade prompt if you don't want to pay.
India is on Anthropic's list of supported countries, and you must be physically in a supported location to use the service.

What the Free plan includes
According to Anthropic's pricing page, the Free plan includes:
Chat on the web, desktop and mobile apps, with your history synced across devices
Web search, so answers can draw on current pages
Code execution and file creation, for example turning a table into a spreadsheet or running a quick calculation
Memory, which Anthropic opened to all users, including free users, in March 2026
Artifacts, the side panel for documents, code and small apps, available on every plan including Free since September 2026
App connectors, which link Claude to some other services you use
Projects: up to five, for keeping files and instructions for one task together
Claude Design, Slides and Docs, for making designs, decks and documents inside a chat
Models: Claude Sonnet and Claude Haiku
What Free does not include, per the same page: Research, Claude Code, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365, scheduled tasks, more than five Projects, and the larger Opus and Fable models. Anthropic's Help Center states plainly that Fable models aren't available on the Free plan.
The free usage limits, explained
This is the part most guides get wrong. Anthropic doesn't publish a fixed number of free messages. Its Help Center says:
Free use has a session-based limit that resets every five hours. The five-hour window starts when you send your first message.
How quickly you use it up depends on the length and complexity of your conversations, the features you use and the model you choose. A long chat with big files uses up your allowance much faster than short questions.
The pricing page also mentions a weekly limit for Free.
Claude notifies you when you've reached the limit, and you can see how much you've used and the time left in Settings > Usage. Anthropic says it may adjust usage limits at its discretion.
So "how many messages do I get free?" has no fixed answer. Ten short questions might cost less than one long conversation about a 50-page PDF.
How to make the free limit last longer
Start a new chat for a new topic. Long threads carry the whole conversation along, so every new message costs more.
Share only the part of a document you need, not the whole file.
Ask clearly in one message instead of many small follow-ups. Say what you want, for whom, and in what format.
Plan around the reset. If you hit the limit at 2 pm, the next window opens five hours after the first message of that session, not at midnight.
Free vs paid plans
Anthropic lists its prices in US dollars, excluding tax. Its Help Center says prices may be shown in local currency where supported and vary by region, and app-store prices can differ, so check the exact rupee amount on the checkout or app-store screen before you pay.
Plan | Price (as listed by Anthropic) | What you get over Free |
Free | $0 | Sonnet and Haiku, web search, memory, Artifacts, limited use |
Pro | $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly ($200) | More usage, more Projects, Research, Claude Code, more models (Fable via usage credits) |
Max | $100 a month | About 5× Pro usage, priority access, $100 a month in API credits |
Ultra (formerly Max 20x) | $200 a month | About 10× Pro weekly usage, no 5-hour limit for verified accounts, $200 a month in API credits |
Team | $20 per seat a month billed yearly ($25 monthly); premium seats $100 ($125 monthly) | Shared workspace and admin controls for 2–150 people |
Enterprise | $20 per seat a month billed yearly (minimum 20 seats), plus usage at API rates | Large organisations |
Is there a free student plan in India?
Not for individuals. Anthropic's Claude for Education is sold to universities, and students get access only if their university has a deal and they sign in with the university email. Check with your college IT or library team. There's no official individual student discount.
Other official free offers
Claude for Open Source: Anthropic's Claude for Open Source page offers six months of free Claude Ultra to open-source maintainers and contributors who meet its eligibility criteria, such as maintaining a widely used project. Most users won't qualify.
The Claude API (for developers building apps) is billed separately by usage. We couldn't find any current official free sign-up credit, so don't rely on claims of one.

Is the free plan enough for you?
The Free plan works well if you:
ask a few questions a day, for studies, emails or quick research
want help drafting, summarising or explaining something
are trying Claude before deciding whether to pay
Paying starts to make sense if you:
regularly hit the five-hour limit in the middle of work
need more than five Projects, or the Research feature, for long assignments or clients
write code and want Claude Code
need the larger Opus or Fable models for harder reasoning tasks
A sensible approach: use Free for two weeks and note how often you hit the limit. If it's rare, stay free. If it happens most days, Pro for one month is a low-risk test.
Stay safe: what to avoid
Fake "Claude Pro free" APKs and websites. Use only claude.ai and the official apps from Anthropic.
Shared or bought accounts. They break Anthropic's rules, can be shut down, and let strangers see your chats.
Pasting sensitive data. Don't share Aadhaar, PAN, bank or OTP details in any AI chat.
Trusting answers blindly. Like any AI assistant, Claude can make mistakes. Double-check facts, figures and anything legal, medical or financial.

No. Free includes Claude Sonnet and Claude Haiku. The larger Opus and Fable models need a paid plan.
Can I use Claude without a phone number?
No. Anthropic requires phone verification for all new accounts, and VoIP, virtual and landline numbers aren't accepted.
