Is 120 a Good Score in JEE Mains? Percentile, Rank and Colleges

If you have scored around 120 out of 300 in JEE Main, you are probably wondering whether it is enough for an NIT, whether you will qualify for JEE Advanced, and whether you should try again. The short version: 120 is a solid, above-average score, but what it gets you depends on your shift, your category and your home state.

Quick answer: yes, 120 marks is a good score in JEE Main. In the 2026 exam, 120 marks worked out to roughly the 95 to 97 percentile, depending on how tough your shift was. That was comfortably above the 2026 General-category cut-off for JEE Advanced (about 93.4 percentile), and it puts you in the range for NITs (mostly newer NITs or core branches), IIITs and GFTIs through JoSAA counselling. It is not enough for computer science at a top NIT.

How JEE Main marks become a percentile

JEE Main is marked out of 300: 25 questions each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (20 MCQs and 5 numerical-answer questions per subject). Every correct answer gets +4 and every wrong answer −1, including the numerical questions.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) does not rank you on raw marks. Because the exam runs in many shifts, it converts your marks into a percentile for your own shift. • General category: core branches such as Civil, Mechanical, Chemical or Metallurgy at newer or lower-ranked NITs are realistic, and better options open up under the home-state quota at your own state's NIT. CSE at a top NIT is not realistic.

• OBC-NCL and EWS: Electrical, Electronics and sometimes CSE at mid-tier or newer NITs become possible, because your category rank is much lower.

• SC and ST: CSE or IT at well-known NITs can be within reach with a category rank from 120 marks.

• IIITs and GFTIs: many newer IIITs and government-funded technical institutes admit candidates in this range, especially in non-CSE branches.

• State and private colleges: many state counselling processes and private universities also accept JEE Main scores.

Remember the eligibility rule for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs: you need at least 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board. Check the latest JoSAA business rules and the previous year's opening and closing ranks before filling your choices.

Is 120 a bad score?

No. It puts you ahead of about 95% of candidates. It only feels low because the top students and toppers' scores get most of the attention. What 120 does not do is guarantee a top branch at a top institute, so how you use counselling matters a lot:

1. Fill many choices, from dream options down to safe ones.

2. Weigh the branch versus the college. A good branch at a newer NIT can beat a branch you dislike at an older one.

3. Use the home-state quota wherever it helps you.

4. Keep state counselling and good private universities as back-ups.

Should you take a drop year or try session 2?

If you scored 120 in session 1, take session 2. Your better score counts, and the weeks between sessions are enough to fix weak chapters and practise full papers. A drop year is a bigger decision; it makes sense only if you are sure you want a much better institute or branch and can study consistently for another year.
