Is Gojo Alive in Jujutsu Kaisen? Gojo's Fate in the Manga and Anime, Explained

Is Gojo alive? In the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, Sukuna kills him in chapter 236 and the September 2024 ending never brings him back. In the anime, he is still sealed in the Prison Realm. Here is the full answer, spoilers marked.

Is Gojo Alive in Jujutsu Kaisen? Gojo's Fate in the Manga and Anime, Explained

Quick answer: No. Satoru Gojo is dead in Jujutsu Kaisen. Sukuna kills him in chapter 236 of the manga (September 2023), and he never comes back. His apparent comeback at the end of chapter 260 turned out to be Yuta Okkotsu using Gojo's body. The manga ended with chapter 271 on 30 September 2024, and Gojo stayed dead.

If you only watch the anime, the answer is different for now: Gojo is still alive but sealed in the Prison Realm. The anime has not reached his death yet. Below we explain both, with spoilers clearly marked.

Is Gojo alive in the anime?

Yes, for now. Here is where the anime stands in November 2026:

  • Season 2 (2023), Shibuya Incident: Kenjaku traps Gojo inside the Prison Realm. He is alive, but completely out of the fight.

  • Season 3, The Culling Game Part 1 (9 January to 27 March 2026): the story follows Yuji, Megumi, Yuta and the others as they try to free Gojo. Gojo stays sealed for the whole season.

  • The Culling Game Part 2 was announced right after the Season 3 finale, with a new director. There is no official release date yet; reports point to 2027.

So an anime-only viewer has not seen Gojo die. His big fight with Sukuna comes after the Culling Game in the manga, so it will be a while before it is animated.

How Gojo dies (manga chapter 236)

Gojo is released from the Prison Realm in chapter 221. The story then builds to the fight everyone was waiting for: Gojo vs Sukuna on 24 December 2018 (in-story date), in Shinjuku.

The fight is close. Gojo uses his Domain Expansion, Unlimited Void, repeatedly, and at the end of chapter 235 it looks like he has won. Then chapter 236 jumps to an afterlife-like scene at an airport where Gojo talks with Suguru Geto, Kento Nanami and other fallen sorcerers. Only after that conversation do we see what happened: Gojo has been cut in half.

Sukuna used Mahoraga's adaptation to learn a slash that cuts through space itself, often called the World-Cutting Slash. Because it targets the space Gojo occupies, his Infinity cannot block it.

Many fans were angry that the strongest sorcerer died off-panel, and "is Gojo really dead?" became one of the most searched questions about the series. The answer did not change.

Did Gojo come back in chapter 261?

This is where much of the confusion comes from. At the end of chapter 260, Gojo appears to walk back into the fight. Fans celebrated. But chapter 261 reveals the truth: it is Yuta Okkotsu, who used Kenjaku's body-swapping technique to move into Gojo's corpse so he could use the Six Eyes and Gojo's cursed technique against Sukuna.

So the person on the battlefield had Gojo's body and powers, but not Gojo's mind. Gojo himself was still dead.

What happens to Gojo in the final chapter?

The manga ended with chapter 271, released on 30 September 2024. Sukuna is defeated by Yuji and the surviving sorcerers. The epilogue follows Yuji, Megumi and Nobara moving forward. Gojo is not revived in the ending, and there is no hidden twist that brings him back.

Fans had spotted "clues" late in the series, such as a clock reading 2:21 in chapter 269, and turned them into return theories. None of them came true.

Why Gege Akutami killed Gojo

Gojo was the series' safety net. As long as he could fight, the younger sorcerers never had to stand on their own. The story's main idea, that sorcerers die alone and the next generation must carry on, only works once the strongest one is gone. His death also sets up Yuji's final fight with Sukuna, which is the real climax of the manga.

Verdict

Gojo is dead in the manga, permanently. He dies in chapter 236, Yuta borrows his body in chapter 261, and the story ends in chapter 271 without bringing him back. In the anime, he is still sealed in the Prison Realm as of Season 3, so anime-only fans have not reached his death yet.
