Top 10 Best Web Series of All Time in the World (2026 List)
The top 10 web series in the world, from Breaking Bad and The Sopranos to Dark and Squid Game, with years, creators, original platforms, honourable mentions and where to watch them in India.

Looking for the best web series of all time? This list picks the ten shows that critics, award juries and viewers around the world keep coming back to, with the years, the creators and the platform each one first came out on. In India we use "web series" for any show we binge online, so a few of these began on TV channels such as HBO and AMC before becoming streaming favourites.
Quick answer: the top 10 web series in the world are Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Wire, Game of Thrones, Chernobyl, Better Call Saul, Succession, Dark, Squid Game and Stranger Things. If you only have time for one, start with Breaking Bad.
How we picked the greatest web series of all time
This is not a list of whatever is trending this week. Every show here had to:
Tell a complete story, so you know the ending is worth the hours you put in.
Have a lasting reputation: major awards, strong reviews over many years, or record-breaking audiences.
Still hold up in 2026 for someone watching it for the first time.
We checked IMDb user ratings as a guide, but those scores move up and down, so we have not quoted exact numbers.

1. Breaking Bad (2008–2013)
Genre: crime drama
Walter White, a quiet chemistry teacher in Albuquerque, learns he has lung cancer. To leave money for his family, he starts cooking methamphetamine with his former student Jesse Pinkman. Over five seasons the mild teacher turns into someone far more dangerous.
Why it is number 1: tight plotting with almost no wasted episodes, Bryan Cranston's transformation as Walter, and one of the most satisfying endings in television. It won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series in 2013 and 2014. When you finish, watch the follow-up film El Camino (2019).
2. The Sopranos (1999–2007)
Genre: crime drama
New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) starts seeing a psychiatrist after a series of panic attacks, and tries to manage two families: his crime family and his real one.
Why it ranks so high: it is widely credited with starting the "golden age" of prestige TV, and it was the first cable series to win the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series (2004). Its final scene is still argued about today.
3. The Wire (2002–2008)
Genre: crime drama
A police wiretap unit in Baltimore takes on the city's drug trade. Each season widens the lens: the docks, city politics, the school system and finally the local newspaper.
Why it ranks so high: creator David Simon, a former crime reporter, shows how a whole city works, from street corners to the mayor's office. It never won an Emmy, yet it regularly tops critics' lists of the greatest series ever made. Give it four or five episodes; the slow start pays off.
4. Game of Thrones (2011–2019)
Genre: fantasy drama
Based on George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels. Noble houses fight for the Iron Throne of Westeros while an ancient threat gathers beyond the Wall in the north.
Why it ranks so high: no show matched its scale, its shocking twists or its global buzz. It won 59 Emmys, the most for any drama series, including Outstanding Drama Series four times. The catch: the final season divided fans, and the early and middle seasons are the show at its best. The prequel House of the Dragon continues the story of House Targaryen.
5. Chernobyl (2019)
Genre: historical drama, miniseries
Five episodes on the 1986 nuclear disaster in Soviet Ukraine, following the scientists and officials who tried to contain it and to get the truth out.
Why it ranks so high: it is chilling, carefully made and short enough to finish in a weekend. It won the Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series. Keep in mind it is a dramatisation: some characters, such as the scientist Ulana Khomyuk, are composites of several real people.
6. Better Call Saul (2015–2022)
Genre: crime drama
A prequel to Breaking Bad about Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer with a big heart and bad habits, and how he slowly becomes the shady lawyer Saul Goodman.
Why it ranks so high: many critics rate it as highly as Breaking Bad for its patient storytelling and Bob Odenkirk's performance. It received 53 Emmy nominations without a single win, a record no one is proud of. Watch it after Breaking Bad.
7. Succession (2018–2023)
Genre: drama, dark comedy
Ageing media billionaire Logan Roy (Brian Cox) refuses to let go of his empire, while his four children scheme, betray each other and fail upwards in the fight to replace him.
Why it ranks so high: razor-sharp dialogue and characters you love to hate. It won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series three times, in 2020, 2022 and 2023.
8. Dark (2017–2020)
Genre: science fiction, mystery
When children start disappearing in the small German town of Winden, four families discover that their pasts, presents and futures are tied together by time travel.
Why it ranks so high: it was Netflix's first German-language original, and it planned its ending from the start, so all three seasons fit together like a puzzle. Watch it in German with subtitles and keep the family tree in mind.
9. Squid Game (2021–2025)
Genre: survival thriller
Hundreds of people buried in debt are invited to play children's games for a huge cash prize, and losing a game means death.
Why it ranks so high: the first season remains Netflix's most-watched series ever, and it made a Korean-language show a global talking point. Lee Jung-jae won the 2022 Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama Series, a first for a non-English-language series. The story ended with season 3 in June 2025.

10. Stranger Things (2016–2025)
Genre: science fiction, horror, coming-of-age
In 1980s Hawkins, Indiana, a boy vanishes and his friends meet Eleven, a girl with psychic powers, who leads them to a monstrous parallel world called the Upside Down.
Why it ranks so high: it mixes 80s adventure films, horror and friendship better than anything else on streaming, and it became one of Netflix's defining shows. It is now complete: the final episode of season 5 came out on New Year's Eve 2025.
