Cost of Living in Hyderabad 2026: Monthly Budget for Singles, Students and Families

Hyderabad is one of the more affordable big cities in India for the salaries it offers. Rent near the IT corridor has risen, but food, transport and bills are still cheaper than in Mumbai or Bengaluru, and the Telangana government's free bus travel for women and free power for eligible homes help many households.

Quick answer: in 2026, a single working professional needs about ₹25,000–₹45,000 a month to live in Hyderabad, depending mostly on whether they rent alone near Gachibowli or share a flat further out. A student can manage on about ₹12,000–₹20,000, and a family of four needs roughly ₹60,000–₹80,000 a month, or over ₹1 lakh with international school fees.

Buying a home: ANAROCK put Hyderabad's average quoted price at about ₹7,990 per sq ft in Q1 2026, with Gachibowli near ₹10,000 and Kondapur near ₹9,700 per sq ft, and outer areas such as Adibatla much lower.

Remember to budget for a security deposit too, usually a few months' rent; zero-deposit services such as Circlepe let tenants move in without paying the full deposit upfront.

2. Transport

  • Hyderabad Metro: fares range from ₹11 to ₹69 per trip since the May 2025 revision. The Red, Blue and Green Lines link Miyapur, LB Nagar, Nagole, Raidurg (HITEC City), Secunderabad and MGBS.

  • TGSRTC buses: the cheapest option for most trips. Under the Mahalakshmi scheme, women and girls who live in Telangana travel free on TGSRTC city ordinary and metro express buses.

  • Autos and cabs: autos and app cabs are convenient for the last mile but add up quickly if used daily.

  • Own vehicle: many residents in the IT corridor use a two-wheeler; fuel typically costs ₹2,000–₹3,000 a month.

A typical metro-plus-bus commuter spends about ₹1,200–₹2,500 a month.

3. Food and groceries

Hyderabad is famous for good, cheap food.

  • Groceries: about ₹4,000–₹6,000 a month for a single person who cooks, and ₹12,000–₹18,000 for a family of four.

  • Mess or tiffin: a student mess subscription costs about ₹3,500–₹5,000 a month.

  • Eating out: a meal at a local restaurant costs a couple of hundred rupees, and a plate of biryani at a popular local place is still affordable; a dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant costs more.

  • Delivery: ordering in regularly can push a single person's food bill to ₹8,000–₹12,000 a month.

4. Utilities and internet

  • Electricity: about ₹800–₹1,500 a month normally, rising to ₹2,000–₹3,500 in summer with AC use. Eligible households under the state's Gruha Jyothi scheme get up to 200 units a month free.

  • Water: about ₹300–₹600 a month, often included in society maintenance.

  • Broadband: about ₹500–₹800 a month for a fibre connection.

  • Cooking gas and a mobile plan add a little more.

5. Healthcare

Hyderabad has some of India's best-known hospitals, from large private chains to government institutions such as Gandhi Hospital, Osmania General Hospital and NIMS. A private GP or specialist consultation costs several hundred rupees or more. Buy health insurance early, because one hospital stay can cost far more than a year of premiums.

6. Education

  • Government schools charge little or nothing.

  • Private CBSE and state-board schools usually charge from tens of thousands to over ₹1 lakh a year, depending on the school.

  • International schools in Gachibowli, Jubilee Hills and the Financial District can cost several lakh rupees a year, which can push a family budget past ₹1 lakh a month.

7. Lifestyle and entertainment

Golconda Fort, Charminar, Hussain Sagar, KBR Park and Durgam Cheruvu make for cheap outings. Movies, gyms, malls and weekend trips (such as Ramoji Film City) vary in cost; a realistic allowance is a few thousand rupees a month for a single person.
