Can I Give an Olympiad Exam After 12th? Eligibility Rules for 2026-27

Is there any Olympiad after 12th? You cannot enter the Indian route to IMO, IPhO, IChO or IBO after passing Class 12, but Class 12 students who qualify compete after their boards. Here are the official 2026-27 rules and the contests open to college students.

Can I Give an Olympiad Exam After 12th? Eligibility Rules for 2026-27

Many students only discover Olympiads in Class 12, or start thinking about them after their boards. So, is there any Olympiad after 12th? The honest answer is mostly no, but there is an important exception, and there are good competitions waiting for you in college.

Quick answer: you cannot start the Indian Olympiad route for the IMO, IPhO, IChO, IBO or IOAA after you have passed Class 12. The official rules for 2026-27 say you must not have finished your Class 12 board exams before a cut-off in the autumn (30 October 2026 for maths, 30 November 2026 for physics, chemistry, biology and astronomy) and must not start university by 1 June 2027. But if you qualify while you are in Class 12, you can keep going after your boards, because the international Olympiads are held in July. Once you are in college, you can take part in university-level contests such as the Madhava Mathematics Competition and the IMC.

How the Olympiad route works in India

India picks its teams for the international science and maths Olympiads through a staged programme run by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), with the first stage for science subjects conducted by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT).

Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy)

  1. National Standard Examinations (NSEP, NSEC, NSEB, NSEA)

  2. Indian National Olympiads (INO), early in the next year

  3. Orientation-cum-Selection Camps (OCSC)

  4. Team training at HBCSE

  5. International Olympiad (IPhO, IChO, IBO, IOAA)

Mathematics

  1. IOQM (Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics)

  2. RMO (Regional Mathematical Olympiad)

  3. INMO (Indian National Mathematical Olympiad)

  4. IMOTC training camp

  5. International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)

Eligibility rules for 2026-27 (from the official brochures)

Stage 1 exam

Who can take it

Class 12 cut-off

University cut-off

NSEP, NSEC, NSEB, NSEA

Studying in Class 10, 11 or 12 at enrolment; born between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2012

Must not have completed Class 12 board exam before 30 November 2026

Must not start university studies by 1 June 2027

IOQM (maths)

Students of Classes 8 to 12; born before 1 August 2014

Must not have qualified (or be scheduled to appear in) Class 12 board exam before 30 October 2026

Must not start university studies by 1 June 2027

Both programmes also require you to be eligible for an Indian passport and to have been studying in India (or in the Indian school system) since 2024. OCI cardholders can write the first stages but cannot be selected for the Indian team.

What this means in plain words:

  • Passed Class 12 in 2026 or earlier (including droppers preparing for JEE or NEET): you are not eligible for the 2026-27 Olympiads.

  • In Class 12 now (boards in 2027): you are eligible this cycle. This is your last chance.

  • In Class 11 or lower: you are eligible and can try again next year.

Can I give IPhO after 12th?

Only if you have already qualified while in Class 12. The International Physics Olympiad's own rules allow students who have finished their school examinations in the year of the competition, as long as they have not started university studies and are not older than 20 on 30 June of that year. That is why Class 12 students who make the Indian team compete in July, after their board exams.

But you cannot enter fresh after 12th, because India's only route to IPhO starts with NSEP, and NSEP needs you to still be in school at the cut-off date. The same logic applies to chemistry, biology and astronomy. For the IMO, the international rules say you must have been born on or after 1 July of the year 20 years before the contest, and must have been in school education on or after 1 December of the year before it.

Key dates in the current cycle

  • IOQM 2026: held on 6 September 2026

  • RMO 2026: 15 November 2026

  • NSEA 2026: 21 November 2026

  • NSEP, NSEC and NSEB 2026: 22 November 2026

  • INMO 2027: 17 January 2027

  • International Olympiads 2027: IPhO (Saudi Arabia), IChO (Chinese Taipei) and IBO (Poland) are planned for July 2027

If you missed the Olympiads: what to do instead

  • Use your Olympiad-style preparation for entrance exams. Problem-solving practice helps directly in JEE Advanced and other tough exams. If you are checking where you stand, see is 120 a good score in JEE Mains.

  • Plan for university contests. Many students first discover competitive maths or programming in college through Madhava, IMC or ICPC.

  • Look for research and summer programmes in college, which value the same curiosity Olympiads reward.

  • Help a younger sibling or cousin start early. Our guide to helping kids prepare for Olympiad exams explains how.

The bottom line

There is no fresh Olympiad entry after you pass Class 12. If you are in Class 12 right now, you still have this one cycle, and if you qualify you can compete internationally after your boards. Once you are in college, the Madhava Mathematics Competition, the IMC and ICPC are the natural next step. Always check the latest brochure on the HBCSE and IAPT websites, because dates and cut-offs are updated every year.
